Advocacy
Advocate is one of the five key pillars within the FANZ strategic framework
FANZ keeps members’ interests front and centre in all government and regulatory discussions impacting franchising.
This work is supported by a volunteer Advocacy and Regulatory Committee. The current members are: Darryl King (Chair), Michael Bright, Callum Floyd, Brad Jacobs, Khushbu Sundarji, Patrick Learmonth and Michelle van Gaalen.
Highlights from 2025 include:
-
Hosting a Commerce Commission webinar on cartel conduct with over 100 attendees and having the Commerce Commission present on Unfair Contract Terms at the inaugural Legal Symposium.
-
Strengthening ties with Hon Chris Penk, Minister for Small Business, and engaging other key Ministers, and meeting Labour’s Small Business spokesperson, Tangi Utikere, to discuss franchising challenges and opportunities.
-
Deepening collaboration with MBIE, who presented at the National Franchise Conference and continue to support member education on compliance and contract terms.
-
Submitting feedback to MBIE on the proposed exclusion of franchises from the Business Investor Visa, advocating for inclusive policy settings.
Please get in touch with us if you believe there is an item of legislation or regulation that FANZ could provide advocacy support for.

One of the standout advantages of being a FANZ member is the power of a united voice. In instances where lobbying the government on critical issues is necessary, FANZ’s collective voice is much louder and more influential than ours alone could ever be. Franchise businesses in NZ contribute a greater proportion of total GDP than most other developed nations and that’s something we believe the Kiwi business mentality should be mighty proud of.
