In a year that produced the highest ever number of entries, the highly contested Supreme Franchise System of the Year went to Columbus Coffee for the second successive year. In the opinion of the Judges, Columbus had produced an excellent application that comprehensively addressed all the criteria required under the Baldrige awards system and had demonstrated highly effective work systems.
Columbus Coffee were also awarded the Food and Beverage Franchisor of the Year, sponsored by Franchise Accountants.
The Supreme Franchisee of the Year Award went to first time entrants, Civic Video - Glenfield, for their impressive application and reflected on their strong focus on marketing and the monitoring of business performance across a comprehensive range of measures.
Civic Video - Glenfield were also awarded the Retail Services Best Franchisee of the Year sponsored by WHK.
The Westpac New Zealand Franchise Awards, held at the Rendezvous Hotel, Auckland on 13th November and attended by more than 280 members of FANZ and their guests, is the annual showcase for outstanding performers in franchising and suppliers to the franchising sector.
Guest of Honour, the Hon Simon Power, Minister of Commerce, thanked FANZ for inviting him back again to the Awards cermony and drew attention to the government's intention to create the right environment to allow SMEs to reach their potential and help drive economic recovery.
The Minister also commented on the substantial contribution to the economy that is made by the franchising sector and thanked Massey University and all those who had participated in the 2010 Franchising New Zealand Survey for enabling a better understanding of the sector to be achieved.
Estelle Logan, Chairman of FANZ said, " Events such as these are important as they recognize excellence by honouring those members of the Association who have demonstrated "best practice" in franchising, whether as franchisors, franchisees or as service providers to the franchise community."
Head Judge and CEO of the New Zealand Business Excellence Foundation, Mike Watson commented, "The judges were impressed by the commitment to customer service and the entrepreneurial spirit and leadership being displayed by all applicants. The evaluation and judging process provides a valuable oversight of the health of the industry and there are some inspiring stories being told coupled with some exceptional results being achieved. In spite of the challenging economic climate the Franchising sector is continuing to evolve and grow."
